There are a number of factors to consider when choosing the right breast implant and a plastic surgery procedure.

Your surgeon's online assessment will advise different implants for each individual and their desired result. To help you decide we will outline the most common factors you will need to consider.

Types of Breast Implants

  • Round Breast Implants

  • Smooth Breast Implants

  • Textured Breast Implants

  • Silicon or Saline Breast Implants

Round breast implants have a tendency to make breasts appear fuller than form-stable implants. A Higher profile can be achieved.

Because round implants are the same shape all over, there is less concern about them rotating out of place.

Smooth breast implants are the softest feeling. They can move with the breast implant pocket, which may give more natural movement.

Smooth implants may have some palpable or visible rippling under the skin.

Textured breast implants develop scar tissue to stick to the implant, making them less likely to move around inside of the breast and become repositioned.

Texturing offers some advantage in diminishing the risk of a tight scar capsule.

Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel. The gel feels a bit more like natural breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket. A leaking implant filled with silicone gel will not collapse.

Silicone breast implants are used less because there may be some risks associated with them if they leak.

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. Should the implant shell leak, a saline implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body.

Saline breast implants provide a uniform shape, firmness and feel.

Size of Breast Implants

When it comes to the desired size of your breast implant, this is a personal choice and one that can be discussed with your surgeon.

In your consultation he will have implants that you may fit against your body to get a better idea of the size you would be choosing, The sizes will vary depending on a cc rating. Your surgeon will advise you on a size that fits your body. Some people are unable to have very large breast implants inserted as their body may be too small.

The most popular sizes are generally between 300 - 350cc.

Adding a Lift

With age comes the inevitable sag of the breasts, called ptosis, and with this the nipple may position at a lower level than desired. In these circumstances the surgeon may advise a lift or mastopexy to correct the position of the nipple.

Reduction with breast implants

There are several factors to consider when having a breast reduction and one of those is whether to have breast implants at the same time.

Breast reduction surgery is desired when a women has lost a lot of weight and has a lot of loose skin, in which case they may wish to have breast implants to restore the symmetr.y and breast fullness.

When breasts are too large for some women, they may suffer with back pain and be unable to fit normal clothes for their size. In this situation a breast reduction would help them. Breast Implants may be added to restore a more natural look,

Breast Implant Incision

This factor is very important given that it determines where the scar will be after surgery and whether it is visible or not.

There are three types of incision

  1. Inframammary Incision – This is the most common incision for breast augmentation and it is located in the fold of skin under the breast. It is usually not visible and can be covered with a bra or even a swimsuit top. Also, for women who may still want to have children later, this incision offers the fewest complications for breastfeeding.

  2. Periareolar Incision – This incision is done around the areola. While the periareolar incision does hide the scar very well, it is rarely associated with higher risks of losing nipple sensation and not being able to breastfeed later.

  3. Transaxillary Incision – The transaxillary incision is made in the armpit. Once this is done, the surgeon creates a tunnel through the fat and then inserts the implant. A huge advantage to this type of incision is that there is no visible scarring to the breast itself after the breast augmentation. The disadvantage is the scar is visible in sleeveless or strapless clothes or when a patient raises her arms.
